Correctly storing your wine
The process of storing your wine is important for
proper aging. Therefore, certain conditions must be met to keep your
wine safe from many adversities.
First of all it must be stored in the proper
temperature with humidity control. Also essential are the lighting
conditions of your wine cellar and lack of movement. Storage units are
available which will help keep your wine stored in the proper
environment. It is actually more important to be consistent with your
wine storage, rather than exact.
Of great importance is to store your wine at the appropriate
temperature. It cane be stored in temperatures that are just above 32
degrees Fahrenheit to approximately 70 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the
optimum range for wine storage is between 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
Keep in mind that wine
matures quicker at higher temperatures. It is also important to store
your wine in a stable environment with little or no change in
temperature. If there are temperature changes it could have detrimental
effects on the taste and fragrance (bouquet) of your wine.
The most favorable range for the humidity of your wine room is between
60% to 70%. A higher humidity can have a harmful effect on your wine
because it encourages the growth of micro-organisms. These
micro-organisms may cause your wine to mature too quickly, and it can
even spoil your wine. A high
humidity level prevents evaporation through the cork because it sustains
moisture inside the bottle.
Consider choosing wine in colored bottles. The colored bottles will
protect your wine from exposure to sunlight, as well as artificial
light, which can also adversely effect the taste, scent, and maturity of
your wine. Although, you should not merely depend on colored bottles. In
order to keep your wine at optimum conditions, you must also store your
wine in dark environments.
The wine bottle itself is an important factor when storing your wine.
Air is not a positive factor for wine. Wine stored in bottles has a
certain amount of air space or ullage. (Ullage is a word used to explain
the fill level of bottled wine.) Larger bottles are usually best because
the larger the bottle the less air space per milliliter of wine. As a
result, you will have better storage conditions. Bottles, such as the
magnum size (equivalent to two
standard bottles), will enhance the aging process of your wine. In
addition, the larger bottles will result in an increased lifespan for
your wine.
Horizontal storage is the best way to store your wine. In this manner,
it will keep the wine in touch with the cork. You do not want your cork
to become dry as the water will evaporate through the cork, which would
be detrimental to your wine.
You may also purchase wine storage units which are horizontal. These
units prevent unnecessary movement and will settle the sediment, which
ensures that your wine will be ready for consumption when you want to
serve it. It is also best to store it with the label up so that it is
visible. It will be easier to locate it and the sediment deposits will
be on the side opposite the label.
