To make
sure the online retailer you purchase from is reliable, it is best to go with
one that accepts Visa or Mastercard, as if there are any problems, they'll be
much quicker to resolve the dispute with a chargeback or similar method.

Building your wine room
Before beginning the construction of your wine
room, you, of course, need to decide where to build it. After you have
established a location for your wine room, the next step is to insulate
the walls and ceiling. The insulation should be 1-1/2 inch thick, rigid,
with a vapor barrier on each side of the insulation. For example you
could use plastic or foil for this barrier. (You will need to use 4' x
8' sheets.) Then either glue, nail or staple these sheets against the
walls and the ceiling. If you are insulating your walls and ceiling in
this manner you should have adequate insulation with an R (resiliency)
factor of 19. You may even insulate the sheets differently on each side
of the wall with one side aluminum and the other side a wood veneer to
match the decor of the room.
The wine room door should also be insulated. It should have a 360 degree
airtight weather stripping in order to maintain the correct humidity. If
you choose a glass door, it must be double paned, thermal, and well
insulated.
Redwood works well for your wine racking. It can be all redwood or
cellar trellis, which is solid redwood coated with black metal powder.
This type of coating will never chip or rust and the redwood holds up
well in humid conditions and will not rot, mildew or produce fungus.
The racks may be customized to fit the different sizes of wine and
champagne bottles. The cubicle sizes of the racks may be either 3-3/8",
3-3/4",4", or 4-1/2", or a combination of those sizes.
You have several options for storing your wine. You may choose to store
your bottles individually. In that case, you would need wine racking for
individual bottles. If you choose to store your wine by the case, you
would need wooden shelves. If you wish to store your wine so that it
gives a nice presentation, use tilted racks. For bottles stored in bulk,
use diamond cubes. If you desire a rustic look use a decanting table and
drawers and clay racking. The depth of racks are either single, double
or triple for
maximum storage. In order to properly identify your bottles, wine tags
may be used. Wine software is available to assist with your wine
inventory.
An example of how many bottles of wine your cellar will hold is as
follows:
If you have a wall that is 10 ft wide by 8 ft high and a 22-1/2 inch
depth of racking, it will hold about 125 bottles per foot. Therefore, 10
ft x 125 bottles = 1,250 bottles. If you prefer modular all redwood wine
racks, they are available at a single depth of 11 3/4".
You may also build wood shelving to hold cartons or cases. The wine
racks may be shipped unassembled in order to nconsiderably reduce the
shipping costs. You my also purchase modular pieces, which are easier to
assemble. Consider the opening of the wine cellar so that the various
pieces of your wine cellar will fit through it. You should find it quite
easy to assemble
the pieces.
Keep the wine room odor-free. Also, keep the wine room at the correct
temperature and humidity level in order to preserve the quality of your
wine. The cooling system in your wine room should be sized correctly for
the area that it cools. Make sure that the cooling system vents out into
another room. You may use split systems for non-venting areas. You
should find a cooling unit that is environmentally safe, is UL approved,
and the proper size. The optimum temperature for your room should be 56
degrees Fahrenheit or 14 degrees Celsius. In order to obtain the BTU
(British thermal unit; a British standard of energy) needed for the
appropriate size cooling unit needed to cool the room, multiply the
length times width times height.
You may add a nice touch to your wine room with custom woodwork such as
wood carvings, moldings, and wood designs. In addition, beautiful
flooring and accessories such as glass door designs, glass etchings,
murals, and other art work can make the wine cellar quite stunning.
